Conscious Eating

As a nutritionist I talk about many aspects of eating. Choosing nutritious food, quality food, nutrients and so on. One aspect of nutrition that is often over looked is mindful eating or conscious eating. There is a lot to be said for eating your food with intention. Being distracted with the television, cellphone or even reading the newspaper can hamper digestion, nutrient absorption and satiety (being satisfied with what you have eaten). Have you ever wolfed down a meal in front of your TV and not really remembered eating it and going back to the kitchen for more food!

When eating consciously look at your food, smell your food, chew each bite well and taste the food. Even at a table filled with people you can do this. By chewing your food you allow the nutrients to be mixed with the saliva and be more prepared to be absorbed by the body through the digestive tract. You are less likely to get gas or heartburn, and you will be satisfied with what you have eaten and not feel the need for more food.

Try this simply process and see how well it works. Your body will thank you for it!
