Know Your Food Coming and Going

A Native American Grandfather told a friend of mine long ago to know your garden coming and going. He was talking about the future of food production in this country. In these changing times knowing what is in your food and where it comes from, just as learning to grow your own food and what is going into that garden and coming out of it is very important.

Factory farming, genetically modified organisms, chemical fertilizers, pesticides and water pollution have made our food unsafe. Big Ag, the lobbyists, government, FDA and many other entities control this and unfortunately profit is more important than the health and well being of our citizens.

What goes into your garden, the soil, the seeds, the water, the sun and the air and how you feed the plants is the coming of the garden. The going is how the food is used, the soil protected, the compost made for next years garden. Letting a field rest and the animals graze and defecate on it for a year or two in between plantings.

My advice as a nutritionist is this. Buy local, organic , seasonal produce. Find a farm in your area to buy raw milk from cows pasture fed. Buy chickens that run free in the sun and peck at the bugs in the dirt, eggs only from those. Buy meat from animals that are pasture raised and 100% grass fed. Organic nuts, whole grains and seeds can be sought out. Don’t drink the tap water or eat processed foods. After all you are what you eat!
